Little Seed – Better Bedding

Estimated read time 2 min read

Little seeds are sound-bite posts where I share a quick thought, video, article, or some other bit of interesting information.

There’s nothing better than snuggling up into a bed with comfy sheets and loads of blankets and pillows. I love climbing into bed at night, or having a lazy morning on the weekend where I take my time getting up. Similar to most fabrics in home decor, however, sheets fall pray to non-organic materials that can contain chemicals that aren’t good for your health or the planet (or the workers that harvested those crops to make the fibers). Years ago, I decided to buy only organic materials for my bedding so I could sleep easy knowing I wasn’t breathing in any off-gassing chemicals while I slept. I can tell you with 100% honesty, I love my sheets and have never had any quality or comfort issues at all.

I did some research on this to find some articles and sources to share with you all. I think the most cost effective sources are either West Elm (look for the organic and fair trade icons under the descriptions) or CB2. There’s also Bambeco, which has a lot of options and also sells sustainable home products beyond bedding, and SOL (Sustained Organic Living).

If you’re interested in more options, this article on Apartment Therapy lists out a bunch to check out. In the article the reference several certifications for textiles, but the one I found helpful in my search was the Global Organic Textile Standard or GOTS. I visited their website and was able to identify a few companies to pursue further. If you’d like to search the Global Organic Textile Standard’s website to see companies that are certified, you can do so here.

Do you use any organic bedding? Do you have a brand you swear by? What are your criteria when you shop for bedding?
